HGY is at least for me and a few more people the most beautiful area of Guiyang. It is mostly newly built and it is still under construction. There is a lake in the centre and many buildings around it. Half or so of them are commercial buildings with a mix of offices, companies, hotels, small businesses and flats. The other half of the buildings are ordinary blocks of flats. There are of course many shops, cafes, bars, a police station, KTVs, a club, restaurants and small or even tiny food places and a street the becomes a street kitchen street at night. Until recently, there used to be only one (pricey) supermarket, but about a month ago a YongHui (YH) opened just underneath my building. Yonghui is a large supermarket and it's known for its quality in fruit and vegetables. Both essential for the Chinese.
The lake is surrounded by various paths and little squares and many benches. People walk, jog, dance, walk their dogs or go out with their children day and night. It's never dull here. There's a water show during the day and in the early evening, which is quite impressive.
There's also a mall at the one end of the lake. There you can find everything from clothes, to cinema and food, but no supermarket. My favourite place is the book shop on the top floor. Even though it doesn't have any books in a foreign language, the atmosphere in there is relaxing, The design is very beautiful, the view through the large windows and the partial glass roof is fantastic and the cafeteria is cosy.
The most spectacular building however is the palace. You will hear many stories about it. Some say it belongs to the government, some say it's the Chinese version of Hugh Heffner's Mansion, some others say it's a luxurious hotel. The truth is, none of the above mentioned is true. It belongs to the company that builds the area. Unfortunately there's no access to ordinary mortals, but only to people who work there. Apparently there are next to offices, restaurants, cafes, gyms, shops, etc. in there. No idea if this is true. But there is a helicopter landing place on the roof.
