Sports day. Finally the big day has arrived. It was originally planned to take place on a Friday morning, then due to unstable weather conditions, plans changed to Wednesday, but because it was raining on Wednesday, it moved back to Friday.
Luckily, it stopped raining sometime in the early hours, and even though the grounds are still wet, we are able to hold this event. It's a one day event with nearly thousand pupils and several teachers taking part and competing against each other.
First thing in the morning is the parade around the track. First some students, followed by the foreign teachers, followed by the Chinese ones. After one lap around the track, we gather on the field and wait for all pupils to march in. We foreign teachers were asked to bring our flags if we have some and carry them around. That's why you'll see me covered in my German flag.
In the videos you will see skippers skipping at an amazingly fast pace. The best jumped over 200 times in one minute. I got dizzy by watching them. There's a row of pupils and directly opposite is a row of teachers counting their jumps. It took me a while to realise that the teachers look at the feet and not at the rope. I tried to count too, but I looked at the rope, which becomes invisible due to the high speed. That's why you have to look at the feet and count how many times they lift off the ground. I wonder why they didn't use the ropes with the counters. There ropes that have a built in counter, so you don't have to count yourself.
All the costumes and decorations are made by the pupils.
