While the West is talking about Burkinis and whether to ban them or not, the Chinese have as always gone a step further.
There are many weird or unusual things in China, and one of them are the so called 'Face-Kinis". If you are curious to know what it is, please click on the following link and see for yourself. Or just look at the photos underneath.
Not only Chinese people, but many other Asians, have a fear of the sun and hide themselves as much as they can. They try to avoid getting tanned. That's why you see, especially women, walking around with an umbrella (from simple ones for rainy weather to some pieces of art for sunny days), wearing long sleeve shirts, trousers or dresses that expose very little skin. Many others wear shorts and something with short sleeves, but carry an umbrella. It is mostly the face they try to hide and protect from the sun. In their minds, pale is posh, pale is aristocratic, pale is chic, etc. They believe that a dark colour means that one is poor and/or uneducated and works outdoors under the burning sun, like peasants or builders or dustmen.
Men don't seem to mind as much as women about getting tanned and you hardly see them walking around with an umbrella in their hand. Women however, use whitening cremes and lotions to appear whiter and paler. It is an obsession most westerners don't understand. In our opinion, colour is great and some westerners even like people with a deep yellow skin colour. I too have to admit that the deeper the colour, the sexier it looks.
If you go to the beach with some Chinese, you will notice two things: many can't swim and won't go into the water and if they do, it'll be until the knees, and they won't sit in the sun. They'll be sitting dressed under the umbrella trying not to get tanned. Of course they will ask you why you sit in the sun, why you want to get tanned, why are you not afraid of the sun, etc.

Mary Poppins? I don't think so.
If you would like to read more by me, here are my novel and my diary from Ar'ar, in the northern Saudi desert. Both available on Amazon as soft and hard copy.
